Comicpalooza 2013

I'm pretty late but Comicpalooza was last weekend and I got a chance to meet vinyl toy artists, Nathan Hamill and Scott Tolleson. If you ever get a chance to meet them, go for it! They were both very friendly and I enjoyed getting a chance to talk with them. I only went one day and didn't get a chance to walk around much but I got exactly what I went for. I am definitely looking forward to going next year and I'm hoping more vinyl toy artists come. Anyways...on to the pictures bc that's what everyone wants to see...

My first print!

So I finally finished the drawing I was doing in Illustrator. I actually finished it on Friday night and I made a few prints of it on Saturday.

Here is the final product:

Although I know I have plenty to learn, I am quite pleased with the outcome. I'm already in the middle of working on my next one and it seems to be going a lot smoother since I am getting familiar with the program.

Now on to the good stuff...Comicpalooza is coming up and Nathan Hamill is going to be there. Seeing as how this is one of his characters, I wanted to give him a print of it. I've had a brand new printer sitting here unboxed for a while and this is the main reason why I bought it. It's an Epson R2000 and, if I must say, I'm lovin' it! After installing it and being hesitant with all the settings I finally said "Screw it" and just printed.

It can be kinda tricky but it isn't too bad if you do some research beforehand. I printed this one on 8x10 Epson Premium Presentation Paper (Matte). I decided to go small on this one since it was my first time and I didn't wanna waste all the bigger, more expensive paper.

I think the colors came out fairly accurate. I didn't mess with any settings nor is my monitor calibrated. I am considering buying a calibrator but seeing as how the colors came out, I'm not sure if I should bother. Also, the print pictured above has a real slim white edge along the top and right sides. I did fix that issue by adding some bleed and it printed to all the edges with no problem.

All in all, I'd say my first print was a success and more should be coming soon!

Adobe Illustrator virgin...

Trying my hand at Adobe Illustrator for the first time. This is taken from a drawing I did for a Nathan Hamill contest I did a few months back. The whole idea was to draw his character(s) in our own way.

Anyways, Illustrator seems to be pretty intuitive once you get the hang of it. I'm sure there is a whole lot more that the program is capable of doing than what I plan on using it for. I actually found a pretty good video that goes through a fairly easy technique to follow. About the only thing I did differently was using gradients for the color filling.

Here's the link: Adobe Illustrator tutorial

I'm diggin' it so far and I'm eager to work on some more stuff! Final picture to come soon.

Giving this blogging thing a go...

So I've decided to share some of my work here rather than just through instagram and twitter. I figure I can post more WIP shots along with some commentary. I also think I will be doing some personal reviews and any new vinyl toys or art that I purchase. Lookin' forward to keepin' up with this...it's sort of reminiscent of the good ol' Xanga days LOL
